I let you leave

I watched you leave from a bench in the park by the old hanging tree

as the grey river flowed to the great open seas

I watched you leave

I stayed all day by that hollow tree and I cried to the sun went to sleep

and I pictured her hair, her long dark hair and I wondered if we’d be free

I stayed all day in the garden contemplating how lucky I was ...

to know the difference and what a burden it’s become

I let you leave on a plane to the west and I let you go with such ease

and I let you think that you weren’t the one to give me the strength that I need

You sailed away, it’s all you could do like a ship casting off at first light

leaving behind the ruin I am in the darkest of times

Oh I could die now so sad and alone I suppose that I could do on my own

go through life careful and cold on this solitary road

And I miss you more than ever before, and wait for this to pass

I’d take a knife to my heart if I could, I pray that this won’t last

So I pack a suit case and say my good byes, I explain I have somewhere to go

that life has a way of throwing us signs and either we learn or we don’t

Oh it’s easy to stay in a place that you know than challenge the world to a fight

no certainties and no promised land but just think what you might find

I let you go with a pain in my breast

a pocket of nothing a world of regret

I’ve never known anything quite like it

and I watched you leave

time flies

bon voyage mon petit it’s late and I must sleep

as sure as we are lying here the sun will rise

we only have an hour before her rays wake the flowers

bringing forth the day to cover up the night

So move over here come close I want to feel you near

ease into the dream come lie with me

how time flies

the thief the enemy of lovers

how time flies

with the one you love...

with the one you love

naked in the dark my eyes betray this wicked heart

I celebrate the night now that you’re here

magic in the air I breathe you taste you everywhere

so glad that you arrived, you saved my life

So move over here come close I want to feel you near

ease into the dream come lie with me

how time flies

the thief the enemy of lovers

how time flies

with the one you love...

with the one you love

the colours of the night

the colours of the night are swimming in your eyes

and I can’t turn away

try as I might it’s a losing battle this I fight

floored in so many ways

the consequence of loving you is all too obvious

and it’s true to say that it’s destroying me

and I’ve no defense no argument to keep you from my door

I’m so drawn into this perverse catastrophe

and it’s enough ...

to tear my heart in two

enough ...

to lead me back to you

and it’s enough ...

as all our dreams fall through

the echoes of the night leave me hypnotised

and I am far away

try as I might it’s a losing battle this I fight

floored in so many ways

the consequence of loving you is all too obvious

and it’s true to say that it’s destroying me

and I’ve no defense no argument to keep you from my door

I’m so drawn into this perverse catastrophe

and it’s enough ...

to tear my heart in two

enough ...

to lead me back to you

and it’s enough ...

as all our dreams fall through

the colours of the night

are swimming in your eyes

and I can’t turn away
